The state-owned complex of the Santa Barbara Barracks, in Milan, is a valuable testimony to the monumental architecture of the 1930s, currently in disuse. Politecna Europa’s project, in view of its destination to the activities of the Italian Army’s Transmission Regiment, preserves its historical value, intervening on seismic improvement and energy efficiency.
The complex includes several buildings articulated for different functions, recognizable by the same plan distribution, with the buildings intended for personnel and command closer to the city, and the buildings intended for storage and repairs, located on further parts of the complex.
The intervention includes the restoration and re-functionalization of seven buildings within the complex, which is protected for its architectural and historical value by the Italian Heritage Surveillance Institution (Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio) of the City of Milan. The project will be entirely developed in a BIM environment, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to integrated design in all its phases, in line with the building heritage digitization objectives of the Italian State Property Agency (Agenzia del Demanio) strategy aimed to recover Italy’s historic barracks.
