In San Mauro Torinese, Oscar Niemeyer’s famous “Spaceship” is preparing to host Italian space company Argotec, choosing this iconic and avant-garde architecture for its SpacePark. Within it, Politecna is in charge of the structural, plant engineering, and technological aspects of the project, while the architectural design is led by Archi2 Architetti Associati. Combining innovative choices and expertise, in fact, the intervention provides secure and highly interconnected environments to house the technological equipment and activities carried out within the operational areas. This is in addition to the intervention’s second central theme, Sustainability, evident in the choice to maximize the building’s energy efficiency and minimize its impact on the existing context.
“A layout that seems to recall the satellite-city from ‘Space Odyssey,’ a large wheel to enhance the functional moments of the internal organization of this complex.” Thus, in 1977 the international magazine Domus described Oscar Niemeyer’s work. Today, the building is experiencing a new season, housing both the company’s executive and administrative offices, as well as its operational areas and laboratories, which here find an ideal futuristic habitat to inspire new and ambitious challenges.
